Over the years, it is no longer unusual and rare to see gay and lesbian couples on the streets, on board public transports, behaving intimately. There are also countries that legalize homosexual marriages. Should this be allowed? Homosexual couples nowadays are mostly in their teens. Will this be a social problem, or merely a passing fad? These couples are mostly from single-ed schools. Is the cause of this issue really the lack of interaction and mingling with members of the opposite sex during secondary school life? Should secondary schools start being co-ed?

The real issue at hand is really whether it is wrong to be in a homosexual relationship. There are many people who claim that homosexuality is going against nature, it is wrong and should neither be accepted nor allowed. Others claim that God did not create the two different genders for no reason. However, is there a difference between true love shared by a man and a woman and true love shared by two members of the sex? Does love discriminate this way?

The Importance of Emergency Drills

I suppose each and every one of us would have experienced a fire drill or any emergency drills, so much that it almost seemed insignificant anymore. But how much effort do we actually put into carrying out these drills seriously, in addition, having the right mindset?

Last Friday, our school conducted a fire drill, partially in commemoration of Total Defence Day. However, this time, the school had intentionally arranged for some students to hide themselves in school and wait for other teachers/students to help them out. Sadly, one student out of the three was not found, and instead was labelled as dead.

This incident left me wondering about how the situation would have been like if it were a real case. Would this incident happen again? After which, could everyone look at Singapore and say proudly that we are a safe country?

Every one of us have a part to play in making Singapore a better place to live in, free of terrorist attacks, and these qualities have to be instill in the minds of young people so that they can start learning from young and then grow up to be responsible members of the society. However, the way these students treat these drills are very much disappointing. In maybe ten years down the road, could Singapore still be that all wonderful and safe place to live in?

This leaves me very worried. Could anything be done to salvage this situation?

Idols and their effect on society.

Idols play an important part on every growing teen's life. Be that person be ugly, beautiful, talented or grossly overrated. Their fanbase will still spread over the far reaches of society. However, is their influence good? or bad?

Firstly, I know of friends who will want to be JUST like their idols. Who want to have romantic and passionate love stories JUST like their idols did in the drama serials. So, they decided, hey maybe I should fall in love with a gangster, get pregnant and maybe two-time him with his close relative.

Even middle-aged women aren't spared from this phenomenon that has swept across the globe. Most middle-aged women are attracted to older, more 'mature' men like Bae Yong Jun of Korea, Andy Lau of HongKong, Leon Lai of China and maybe Jack Neo of Singapore.

For these idols people are willing to even shell out most of their hard-earned money to possess the merchandise with the idols on them.

Is this a moral issue that is affecting us? Are we too caught up in dreaming that our reality is slowly being consumed?

That is a question that leaves to be answered.
